The Gorch Fock is one of the most famous training sailing ships in the world and an important symbol of the German Navy. She was put into service in 1958 and is named after the writer Gorch Fock, the pseudonym of Johann Kinau, who fell during the First World War in the Battle of Jutland. The 1958 Gorch Fock is the successor to a ship of the same name built in 1933, which was handed over to the Soviet Union after the Second World War as a reparation payment, where it sailed under the name ‘Tovarishch’.

The main task of the Gorch Fock is to train officer candidates and crews for the German Navy. It offers cadets practical training in which traditional seafaring and modern seamanship go hand in hand. On the ship, the candidates learn important seafaring skills such as navigating, handling sails and rigging, as well as teamwork and discipline, often under harsh conditions. These training trips are designed not only to impart technical knowledge, but also to test and strengthen the physical and mental resilience of the crew.

The Gorch Fock is a three-masted barque measuring approximately 89 metres in length and with space for more than 200 people. It regularly sails the world's oceans, stopping in many ports to represent the Federal Republic of Germany abroad. In addition to its training mission, the ship thus also fulfils a diplomatic role by acting as an ‘ambassador at sea’ for Germany.

Despite technical developments in shipping, traditional sailing is the main focus on the Gorch Fock. The conscious decision to forgo modern comforts is intended to provide the cadets with a tough but educational seafaring training that includes not only theoretical knowledge but also physical challenges.

The kit includes pre-sewn sails, all parts and fittings, pre-sorted by assembly. Various types of wood and precision-cut components enable precise assembly and ensure a very realistic, detailed appearance. The kit includes a coloured step-by-step construction manual that shows all work steps in great detail. Detailed photos show complicated steps and ensure quick orientation.
