Boeier Dutch yacht around 1714

The Dutch Boeier is a traditional Dutch sailing ship that can look back on a long history and is considered a symbol of Dutch maritime culture. The development of the Boeier probably began in the 16th century and was closely linked to the transport and trade requirements of the time on the Dutch inland waterways and coasts. These ships were specially designed for the shallow waters in the Netherlands and therefore have a characteristic flat bottom without a keel. This allowed them to navigate easily in shallow waters and on sandy beaches, making them ideal for the Dutch coastal regions and the Wadden Sea coast.

The hull of a Boeier is wide and round, and the ships are usually equipped with leeboards that serve as a substitute for a fixed keel. These centreboards give the ship stability when sailing and prevent it from drifting to the side. The high, upward-curving bow is also typical of the Boeier, often richly decorated and often used as a status symbol in the 17th and 18th centuries. The ship type was available in different sizes and was used for trade as well as for leisure and even for fishing.

In the 19th century, the Boeier gradually lost its importance as more modern ship models became established and steam navigation began. Nevertheless, the Boeier remained as a traditional leisure and sports boat. In the 20th century, it experienced a renaissance, especially among lovers of classic sailing ships and in historical shipbuilding. Today, Boeiers are often seen at traditional sailing regattas and events such as the ‘Skûtsjesilen’ in Friesland. They are a popular and admired example of Dutch craftsmanship and shipbuilding tradition.

The Corel kit is modelled on the yacht of Elector Maximilian Emanuel II, an important Bavarian ruler and military leader. He took a particular interest in naval art and shipbuilding, which led him to introduce the design and use of such boats in Bavaria. He was impressed by the Boeier type during his time in the Netherlands, where he gained military and cultural experience that he later brought to his native Bavaria. His interest in these boats not only demonstrated his love of nautical art, but also his diplomatic skills, as he formed close ties with the Netherlands by buying and promoting Dutch boats. Maximilian Emanuel II used the Boeier for representative and diplomatic purposes on Bavarian waters and popularised the design in Bavaria.

This model kit impresses with its extensive features in proven Corel quality. All wooden parts are perfectly lasered. Parts of the planking are already included in this kit as laser-cut parts. The complete fittings set is equipped with the extensive decorations made of cast brass, which make this model a special piece. The construction plan contains many detailed sketches in addition to the large views, spread over 10 plan sheets, which are supplemented by the four-language construction manual with a parts list. A simple model stand is included.
