HMS Supply was built in England in 1759. She was originally designed as an armed tender, which meant that she was used primarily to support larger warships. Her sleek design and small size made her a fast and manoeuvrable vessel, ideal for use in shallow coastal waters. HMS Supply is best known for her participation in the First Fleet, a fleet of 11 ships that set sail from England for Australia in May 1787. This expedition marked the beginning of European settlement in Australia. The First Fleet transported about 1,500 people, including convicts, soldiers and crew, to establish a new colony in Australia. After arriving in Australia, HMS Supply remained in the region and was of vital importance to the young colony. She was used for numerous supply trips between the various settlements and Norfolk Island, which was also settled in 1788. After several years of service to the colony, HMS Supply was finally declared unsuitable. In 1792, she was decommissioned and broken up. However, her name and role live on in history, especially in relation to the founding of Australia.
The HMS Supply is considered a symbol of the determination and challenges faced by Australia's first European settlers. Its legacy is particularly emphasised in Australian history as it played a central role in the establishment of the first colony.
