Aviso of the Sardinian Navy.
Built in England in 1834 and put into service in the Sardinian Navy in 1835, the Gulnara is a typical example of the transition from sailing ship to steamship. The steam engine in this ship was only to be regarded as a purely auxiliary drive. The ship was still fully sailable.
As an observation, escort and passenger ship, the Gulnara served Sardinia until 1861, when it was taken over by the Italian Navy. The Gulnara was equipped with an oscillating steam engine made by Fawcett & Preston, Liverpool. Part of the wheel blades could be swung round when sailing under sail to reduce drag.
The model kit of the Gulnara was designed in such a way that construction difficulties could be largely avoided. The result is a kit that can be successfully built by beginners without any problems, as well as offering many fine details to the experienced modeller.
The frames and keel are already cut out by laser. The double hull planking is made of selected strip material. The paddle wheels, stern gallery and many hardware parts are already ready in the kit. Carefully designed construction plans and detailed assembly instructions ensure a pleasant and uncomplicated assembly.
With the slender elegant hull, the interesting superstructure with boiler and high chimney, the harmonious sails, the model of the Gulnara is a treat from the pioneering days of steamships.
The kit contains all the necessary materials and fittings, mostly in fine brass quality. For the rigging all necessary blocks and rigging twine are in the box, a sail set or sailcloth can be ordered as accessories. A simple model stand is included.
A set of ready sewn sails is optionally available under item no. |61913|.
