The Rainbow was one of the most famous yachts to win the America's Cup. The yacht was commissioned by American industrialist Harold Vanderbilt and designed by William Starling Burgess. The Rainbow was built in 1934 and was part of the J-class of yachts designed specifically for the America's Cup.The Rainbow participated in the 12th America's Cup regatta in 1934, competing against the British yacht Endeavour. The regatta took place off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island. The Rainbow won the regatta with an outright 4-2 victory in the best-of-seven series. The yacht was known for her speed and maneuverability and could sail well in strong winds and high waves.After winning the America's Cup, Rainbow was sold by Harold Vanderbilt and changed hands several times. She was finally scrapped in the 1950s.
To this day, the Rainbow is considered one of the most famous yachts in the history of the America's Cup and helped make the competition one of the most important events in international sailing.
The kit includes a prefabricated plastic hull made of polystyrene. The prefabricated hull significantly reduces construction time. Also, difficulties that can arise when planking a hull in frame construction are eliminated from the outset. The superstructure, mast and deck are made of wood.
