Endeavour - English challenger for America's Cup 1934
The schooner Endeavour was a famous sailing ship that is best known for its participation in the America's Cup. The America's Cup is a sailing competition that has been held since 1851 and is considered the oldest and most prestigious competition in sailing.
Endeavour was designed by W. Starling Burgess in 1934 and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island. The ship was a schooner with a length of 74 feet and had a crew of 16 people. The Endeavour took part in the America's Cup in 1934 and 1937, but lost both times to the defender Rainbow. Despite this, the ship was considered one of the fastest and most advanced of its time. After the second America's Cup race, Endeavour was sold and served as a private yacht and charter boat. It was finally abandoned in a harbour in New York City in 1957 and fell into disrepair. In the 1980s, an initiative was launched to build a replica of the ship, now known as Endeavour II, which still occasionally competes in America's Cup races.
The kit contains a prefabricated plastic hull made of polystyrene. The prefabricated hull considerably shortens the construction time. Difficulties that can arise when planking a hull in frame construction are also eliminated from the outset. The superstructure, mast and deck are made of wood. Many brass and wooden fittings are also included. In addition to the plan, there are illustrated instructions. Printed fabric sails and a simple stand are also included.
