The sail training ship Mercator is a Belgian sail training ship that was commissioned in 1932. It was originally built as a merchant ship. It was seized by the Germans during the Second World War and used as a training ship and returned to Belgium after the war. It served as a sail training ship for the Belgian Navy until 1961. The ship has a length of 85 metres and can accommodate up to 80 students. It has made several voyages around the world and is now stationed in Oostende as a museum ship.
The Mercator's construction kit was deliberately kept small and inexpensive to save space. This interesting school ship thus offers an inexpensive alternative to the large school ships Gorch Fock and Amerigo Vespucci. The construction is traditional with keel, frames and strip planking. All parts are precisely laser cut. The fittings are made of etched brass and cast brass, the dinghies are injection-moulded plastic. A sail set is not available for this model size.
