The corvette Astrolabe was a sailing ship sent by the French Navy on two expeditions to Antarctica and Oceania between 1826 and 1837, under the command of Jules Dumont d'Urville. The ship was named after the French astronomer and explorer Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse, who disappeared in 1788 during an expedition in the South Seas. The expeditions of the ‘Astrolabe’ contributed to the discovery and exploration of areas in Antarctica and Oceania and provided important geographical, ethnographic and scientific data.
The 1:50 scale kit is particularly easy to assemble because the required components are not too small and details can be easily represented. The materials used are exceptionally high quality. The frames are perfectly and cleanly laser-cut. The plywood deck already has a laser engraving that imitates deck planking. The hull is planked with a layer of fine wood, so double planking is not necessary. A complete set of fittings and rigging material is included in the kit. The cannons are turned from brass, the figurehead is cast from brass. The metal anchor and rings are already dyed black. The multilingual building instructions consist of a 43-page colour booklet with explanations and pictures describing the construction. A large plan with drawings and details completes the instructions.
A simple model stand is included in the kit.
A set of sails is not included but is optionally available.
