On April 10, 1912, the Titanic, the largest and most luxurious ocean liner in the world, set sail from Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York.
Her sinking cost the lives of 1495 people and was the beginning of the greatest legend in the history of shipping. The Titanic did not have enough lifeboats for all the passengers on board; there were only about 1200 seats for the total of 2223 passengers.
In the early morning hours of April 15, 1912, the Titanic collided with an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland. The sinking of the Titanic was the largest civilian maritime disaster in modern seafaring. 1518 people lost their lives. Only 711 of 2223 passengers survived the disaster.
Numerous myths and legends have grown up around this disaster, making the Titanic probably the most famous ship in history.
For decades, historians, treasure hunters, oceanographers and adventurers searched for the wreck. It was not until 1985 that oceanographer Robert Ballard, on a secret mission on behalf of the U.S. Navy, discovered the wreck of the Titanic about 800 km off the Canadian coast at a depth of 3784 meters.
Minutes before the Titanic sank into the Atlantic, its lights went out along with the dream of reaching New York.
