Angry Dog - Cog from 1390
Wooden kit
The cog was a type of Hanseatic sailing ship that was primarily used for trade, but could also be equipped as a warship in times of military conflicts between the Hanseatic cities and pirates. It has a mast and a square sail. Just below the top of the mast was sometimes a lookout called a crow's nest. Aft (at the back), cogs had a stern castellum and in the course of the 14th century a bow castellum was often added at the bow (tip of the ship).
On 22 April 1401, according to later tradition, Klaus Störtebeker was captured off Heligoland on his ship Toller Hund by a convoy of Hamburg graveyard ships under Nikolaus Schocke and Hermann Lange, both Hamburg councillors and English sailors, captured after a fierce battle and brought to Hamburg on the Bunte Kuh. A traitor is said to have poured liquid lead into the rudder and thus rendered the ship unmanoeuvrable - alternatively, this is explained by the destruction of the main mast by bullets from the Bunte Kuh.
