FIFIE Scottish Fishing Cutter

The Fifie class is a type of fishing cutter developed on the east coast of Scotland.
It was used by Scottish fishermen from the 1850s until well into the 20th century, when many were converted for screw propulsion. These boats were primarily used to fish for herring with drift gillnets, and along with other boat designs were referred to as herring drifters.

While the boats varied in design, they can be classified by their nearly vertical bow and stern, long straight keel, and wide hull, which made the fifies very stable in the water and allowed them to carry a large sail area-and made them even more stable after engines were installed and sail area was reduced accordingly. However, the long keel made them difficult to maneuver in small harbors.

The Fifie kit is based on a later version with screw propulsion. It makes a very attractive model, either for display or motorized.

The kit contains laser cut MDF parts for keel,frames and all substructures. Parts for superstructure are made of laser cut wooden parts. The hull must be double planked, the deck single planked. The material for this is selected and of particularly good quality. High quality hardware parts made of etched brass and turned wood parts are included in the kit. Sailcloth, a metal propeller and some decoration for the deck are included. A simple model stand is included in this perfect set !

The building instructions consist of a book with extremely many pictures and explanations (English) as well as an extensive set of large-format plans from which dimensions and details are well visible. A German translation is included in the kit.
