MAYFLOWER Billing Boats
Faithful model of an English three-masted galleon.
A three-masted galleon from around 1615. 19.50 m long, 7.95 m wide, draught 3.35 m, displacement 180 tonnes. The first records of the "Mayflower" bear the date 6 September 1620. After some initial difficulties, the ship sailed from Plymouth in England with 102 men, women and children on board. After 67 days at sea, the "Mayflower" dropped anchor in the harbour that was later named Provincetown - almost 200 English miles further north than planned. The "Mayflower II" was built in 1957 in Brixham, Devon, and sailed to the USA, where she now lies at anchor as a gift to the American people.
