Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes Occre model kit
The frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes was built in Havana in 1788 for the Real Armada Española. She was equipped with 34 cannons. When she left Montevideo on 9 August 1804, her cargo holds were full of gold, silver, copper, tin, vicuña wool, cinchona bark and cinnamon.
On 5 October 1804, there was a naval battle at Cape Santa Maria between the Royal Navy and the Spanish fleet. The La Mercedes was hit by a projectile and sank almost immediately.
The American salvage company Odyssey Marine discovered the wreck of the frigate in the Gulf of Cádiz in May 2007 using modern sonar investigations. Using an underwater robot controlled from the ship, which reached a depth of 1100 metres, the long-lost cargo of the La Mercedes was recovered.
This included 500,000 silver and gold coins (8 reales coins and escudos minted in Lima in 1803).
It is the largest treasure recovered from the seabed to date.
Part of the recovered treasure is now on display in the Archaeological Museum in Cartagena.
The kit contains sails, all parts and fittings, sorted by component groups. Different types of wood and precision-cut parts enable exact assembly and ensure a very realistic, detailed appearance. The kit includes a full-colour step-by-step construction manual that shows all the steps in detail. Detailed photos show complicated steps and provide quick orientation.
Tools and adhesives are not included in the kit!
