Running Hardware

Ship's shaft systems provide powerful propulsion and purposeful locomotion for model ships. The ship's shaft transmits the rotary motion of the motor directly to the ship's propeller, which is why there is only a slight loss of power. In order to ensure smooth sailing, a ship's shaft system consists of the stern tube, the shaft as well as the bearing, adjusting ring and seals. A complete propulsion system for a model ship consists of the motor and the components already listed. All parts are available in our online shop. To ensure that your model ship sets the right course, you should choose a shaft for the installation of the motor that matches your model. If you have any questions regarding the selection of a suitable ship's shaft, we will be happy to advise you!

Our range of ship shafts for model boats

Our range of ship shafts for model boats extends from racing boat ship shafts to Compact ship shafts and simple, inexpensive shafts for small boats. The slim Compact shafts consist of a brass stern tube, an aluminium motor mount (flange), a stainless steel shaft and a rigid motor coupling. The motor coupling is the connection from the motor drive shaft to the boat shaft. Rigid direct couplings cannot be shortened because the flange is glued to the sterntube and thus provides an aligned connection between the engine and the shaft.

Our cheaper and long shafts with bronze bearings and brass stern tubes are suitable for large model ships. The small, also inexpensive stainless steel ship shafts with brass stern tubes and self-lubricating bronze bushings and Teflon bearings should rather be used for small models without precision work. Our completely maintenance-free shafts for submarines, racing boats and scale models are self-lubricating and watertight. However, they cannot be shortened. Ship's shafts with ball bearings prove to be of great advantage, as the length can be adapted to the ship by shortening the stern tube and the stainless steel shaft. However, the load on the bearings should not be so high and the shafts should be installed in model ships with a low speed.

The right ship's shaft system for every model ship

In the JOJO model shop you will find bearing-mounted and maintenance-free shaft systems for your model ships. For simple drives on your model ship, we recommend the "300mm M4 ship's shaft system". This consists of a brass stern tube and a 4mm stainless steel shaft. It is mounted in two plain bearings. For larger ship models with a powerful drive we can recommend the "Ship's shaft system 255mm M4". Like all simple shaft systems, this one is secured on the motor side by means of an adjusting ring. If you are looking for a shaft system that can be shortened, you will also find it in our online shop. The "Shaft system 290/M4 can be shortened" is an example of a shaft system that can be shortened. This ship's shaft system was specially developed for fine scale models and submarines. The advantage: Absolute freedom from maintenance and it can be individually adapted!

Accessories for shaft systems

The motor is assembled and for a smooth drive of the ship's shaft system and for the complete assembly of the model drive you need further accessories? To equip the shaft system, you will find various types of couplings, coupling hoses, adapters for mounting on ship shafts or grease nipples for continuous greasing of the shafts and bearings in our shop. To prevent water from entering the stern tube, the ship's shaft should be greased regularly. For this purpose, you can obtain water-resistant shaft grease with corrosion protection in our online shop. Friction and wear are no longer a problem and the water remains free of pollutants. Thanks to our extensive equipment, you can set sail with your model ship without any worries!
