Remote Control Systems

Remote control

All model ships that are to fly across the lake or play a sound require a remote control system. The elementary device here is the right remote control. In addition to transmitters, receivers and servos, you will find further modules and features for your model ship in the JOJO Schiffsmodell-Shop.

Receivers, servos, expansion and switching modules for model ships

Remote controls with at least 2 channels are a prerequisite for controlling model ships. In our online shop you will find the right receiver for 4 to 9 channel remote controls. Each receiver has different strengths and features. Therefore, pay attention to what features you need in the receiver. Important criteria when choosing a receiver are, for example, the reaction time, range and how many channels the receiver should and can be assigned to. Generally, our receivers have a new Hopping Telemetry Transmission high-frequency unit with high-quality components and state-of-the-art software due to innovative technology. To be able to switch functions by remote control, an RC remote control with a free channel and a switch module/switch are required. With this you can then control accessories such as lights, winches or sound by remote control.

Beginner set remote control

We have put together two different remote control sets for model ship captains. Here you have all the necessary components for controlling a ship perfectly coordinated.  The starter set includes a 2-channel control system, a speed controller for the drive motor, a high-capacity battery and a simple charger.  The Nautik Starter Set contains a branded remote control with 4 channels from Kyosho and a speed controller for a brushed electric motor as well as a powerful servo for the rudder Adjustment.

Extension modules for remote controls

In addition to the classic components of a remote control, you can expand the technology of your remote control. Ship models can be equipped with many additional special functions. Expansion modules and components for remote control systems of the FUTABA® F series make it possible to install multi-switch/prop modules and up to 16 additional switching channels in the remote control.

Video transmission for model ships

Driving model ships is an experience worth capturing with a camera. Video transmission is a great gadget for this. That is why we offer a high-quality video transmitter for transmitting video images in our online shop for model ships. The transmitter is practically small and very powerful. In addition, it is very easy to connect to cameras with SMA connection.

What are model radio remote controls?

With the radio remote control, the pilot operates switches and levers which are translated by the transmitter of the control unit into radio signals and sent to the receiver. The receiver decodes the signals and transmits them to the control elements such as servos, speed controllers or multi-switches of the model vehicle. Typical examples of such control functions are the rudder on a ship, changing the speed of an engine, switching lights or playing sounds.

Multi-channel remote controls

Radio remote controls differ essentially in the number of channels with which functions can be controlled. A control with 2 channels can only influence the speed and direction of a model (e.g. a car). An 8-channel remote control allows you to control at least eight functions. When buying a new radio control system, plan how many functions it will control.

Transmission frequencies of remote controls

In Germany, the frequency ranges 27 MHz, 35 MHz, and 40 MHz are designated for radio transmission in model making, whereby the 35 MHz range may only be used for aircraft. However, remote controllers in these frequency bands are obsolete and are almost no longer offered. For model boats, however, the 40 MHz controllers still have clear advantages in terms of range on the water.

The newer 2.4 GHz technology represents a clear leap forward in quality, the transmission capacity is much higher and, thanks to coded transmission of the control commands, many more models can be operated simultaneously in one place without the signals duplicating and influencing each other.

Types of remote controls

There are 3 main types of control systems. Pistol grip, console and handheld remote controls.

Pistol grip remote controls are held like the grip of a pistol due to their design and are mainly used for RC model cars as well as in model ship building for racing boats. Pistol controls have 2-3 channels - leaving one channel for a special function.

Console and hand-held remote controls are mainly used for controlling helicopters and aeroplanes, and for model ships with many special functions. Handheld transmitters must be held during operation. Console transmitters have a strap so that enough fingers are free to finely control the sticks and also have a support surface for the heel of the hand.

Telemetry

The latest generation of remote controls often have built-in telemetry transmission.
Sensor readings such as temperature or voltage of the drive battery are sent back directly from the model's receiver to the remote control and shown on the display. This means that you can always see whether there is still enough driving time or whether the motor or speed controller is overheating.

Manufacturers of radio remote controls

There is a wide range of manufacturers offering various control systems. Well-known brands include Multiplex, Jeti-Duplex, Futaba FHSS and FASST, Graupner HoTT, Kyosho and Spektrum. The manufacturers of remote controls have developed different transmission protocols for their remote controls in the 2.4GHz range. These protocols must match between transmitter and receiver. As a rule, receivers and transmitters from different manufacturers are not compatible.
